Celebrate the big O-N-E at Eugenia’s.
First birthdays are such a fun milestone, and at Eugenia Photography we always celebrate accordingly! A first birthday session is $150 with a CD (average 25 edited photos) and print release. The celebrating lasts about 45 minutes and includes three outfit changes. You can also bring a cake for smashing if you’d like! Cake always comes last so plan to come ready in your first outfit!
Here are some tips for a successful cake smash!
1. Don’t assume they will dive right in
All parents hope that their little one will dive in and make a mess of the cake. But that doesn’t always happen and that’s okay. Not every child wants to dive right in and make a mess no matter what tricks we try. It’s important to know that even if they don’t turn their cake into a gooey pile of crumbs, I am still able to catch fun images of them poking at it or daintily picking of bits of icing or decorations. Sometimes we may need to strategically place a little treat to help things along– puffs have been a big help getting a skeptical baby to get into the cake! It’s also a good idea to bring along a favourite toy and some snacks in case your little one needs some encouraging.
2. Come prepared for a mess!
Cake is the last thing we do in the session. A change of clothes for the birthday boy or girl, is a good idea. It can get VERY messy! Parents will likely become covered in cake and icing during the celebrating too! Bring plenty of wipes + a towel- and know you might get messy in the process!
3. Cake and icing choices matter
When picking out your own cake or making one to bring to a smash session, I suggest choosing a white cake over chocolate or red velvet. Also, bright colored icing photographs better than plain white or chocolate, with the exception of red. Steer clear of red and black icing. I have also found that creamier icing and less dense cakes are better for smashing. Fondant and really stiff icing can make it harder for them to get messy.
“I am in awe of the photographs of my one-year-old daughter that you so beautifully captured. These are not only pictures, but ART! Thank you so much for your creativity and vision to suspend moments that my family and I will always look upon with joy and gratefulness!” Happy Mom
